I found the stage early. The substance came from doing the work.

The stage has felt like a natural place for me since I was young. What I bring to it now was earned elsewhere: in publishing, entrepreneurship, marketing, management and associations — developing ideas, testing them, making them work, and learning from the ones that didn’t.

Today, speaking, moderating and independent perspectives are where those worlds come together.

What shaped the way I work

Moving between those worlds taught me not to assume that the obvious answer in one context will make sense in another.

Doing, not just advising

Much of my career involved building, selling, publishing, managing and carrying responsibility for the result.

That changes how you look at an idea. It eventually has to survive contact with customers, colleagues, budgets and reality.

Across boundaries

I have worked across disciplines, companies, associations, countries and cultures.

Moving between those worlds taught me not to assume that the obvious answer in one room will make sense in another.

Curiosity before certainty

I am usually more interested in finding the useful question than in arriving quickly at the right answer.

A different perspective can often unlock more than another layer of expertise.

Independent Perspectives

Independent Perspectives is how I bring those threads together.

My work has taken me through entrepreneurship, publishing, advising, management, speaking and moderating. Different roles, but often the same underlying task: understand what is really going on, look at it from more than one angle, and find a way forward that people can actually use.

I am not especially interested in pretending there is one correct answer when there usually isn’t. I would rather ask a better question, challenge an assumption or offer a perspective that helps someone see the situation differently.

That is what connects the Perspectives I write, the talks I give, the conversations I moderate and the work I do with people and organisations.
